See the person first
No person is fully described by a diagnosis. People have names, preferences, humour, relationships, skills and ambitions. Respectful language leaves room for that full identity.
Different people may prefer different words. When possible, ask the person or family what language they use and follow their preference.
Move beyond pity
Stories that show only suffering or inspiration can flatten a person into a message for someone else. Better representation includes ordinary life, real choices, contribution and complexity.
The aim is not to pretend barriers do not exist. It is to name the barrier accurately without turning the person into the problem.
